Acupuncture

Acupuncture is indicated mainly for functional problems such as those that involve paralysis, non-infectious inflammation (example - allergies), and pain. The following are some of the general conditions, which may be treated with acupuncture

For small animals:

  • Mulculoskeletal problems (such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, and some vertebral disc pathologies)
  • Skin problems (such as lick granulomas and otitis externa - itchy ears)
  • Respiratory problems (such as feline asthma and bronchitis)
  • Gastrointestinal problems (such as diarrhea and constipation)
  • Selected reproductive problems

For large animals:

  • Mulculoskeletal problems (such as hock arthritis, muscle soreness, tying-up and laminitis)
  • Respiratory problems (such as heaves and bleeders)
  • Selected reproductive problems

Acupuncture is one of the safest forms of medical treatment for animals when administered by a properly trained veterinarian. Side effects of acupuncture are rare, but they may occur. An animal's condition may seem worse for up to 48 hours after a treatment.

Other animals may become sleepy or lethargic for 24 hours after acupuncture. These effects are a positive indication that some physiological changes have occured and they are most often followed by an improvement in the animal's condition.
